Sutton Coldfield Men’s Hockey Club was formed in 1891 and is one of the oldest clubs in the Midlands. The club has shared its home with Sutton Coldfield Cricket club since 1891 and continues to use the Rectory Park clubhouse. Having just gained promotion, the men’s 1st XI will be playing in the Midlands Premier Division next season.
The Ladies’ Club was reformed after the Second World War in 1949 and has achieved amazing levels of success in recent years. The 1st XI plays in the National League Premier Division and are past winners of the league. Sutton Ladies’ have produced some top international players including successful Olympians Jane Sixsmith, Barbara Hambley and Mandy Davies. Jane Sixsmith is President of the Ladies’ Club.
Sutton Juniors began life in 1989 following the increased interest in hockey after the Men’s GB team won the Gold Medal at the Seoul Olympics. The Club have always excelled at providing an excellent level of coaching for all youngsters, and this has led to a significant number of players achieving international, county and Midlands regional representation. Indeed, the under-15 girls won the National Club Championship in 2004.
The Club play the majority of home games on the all weather pitches at Wyndley Leisure Centre and Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School, both in Sutton Coldfield. Then all teas and socialising take place back at the Clubhouse in Rectory Park. Each year, the Club holds a Gala Ball which is attended by over 200 members from all hockey sections and acts as a great opportunity to review the season and present the individual Player of the Season and Top Goalscorer awards for each team within the Club.
Sutton Sailing Club is above all a friendly club. We offer excellent sailing facilities for beginners through to those of a good club racing standard, and compliment these with a varied social programme.
The club provides the opportunity to sail throughout the year whether you wish to race competitively (Sundays and Wednesday evenings daylight permitting) or just potter around on a very attractive stretch of water in the heart of Sutton Coldfield. It is a place to meet with people who share a passion in all things sailing related.
The club is an RYA Recognised Training Centre where we introduce and train those new to the sport, and encourage those beyond the first steps to improve and gain higher skills in the very broad activity that is sailing. To support our training programme there are a good number of club boats, which are also available for hire by members, avoiding the need to buy a boat when first starting out.
Birmingham Model Yacht Club's main interest is in sailing and racing model yachts - they are a thriving part of the club and a very accessible way for anyone to further an interest in sailing, especially if the physical demands of dinghy sailing no longer appeal.
Hopefully you will find all the information you are looking for in the pages of this site, but if you would like a chat with a member of the club about trying sailing, learning to sail or joining the club, please give John Wilber a ring on 0121 355 5631 and he will be very happy to advise you.
