Hi Kent is the local registered charity providing practical help for deaf and hard of hearing people, and making a very real difference to the lives of the one in six local people who live with a hearing loss. Hi Kent has been established for 31 years and was awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service in 2007. Hi Kent has a unique Centre in Brewer Street, Maidstone and a Shop in Week Street, Maidstone, both of which have a fully operational range of equipment to help deaf and hard of hearingpeople overcome the social isolation that deafness can cause.
Hi Kent has close links with Maidstone and the surrounding areas and has regular free community hearing aid aftercare clinics in 3 locations in Maidstone, and also in Allington, Bearsted, Coxheath, Parkwood, Aylesford, East and West Malling, Larkfield and Wateringbury, where local people can turn up without an appointment to have their hearing aids maintained and obtain new batteries.
Hi Kent also runs two free Lipreading Classes in Maidstone - this is a tremendously important skill which enables people who have become deaf to communicate once again and re-establish normal life and social interaction.
Hi Kent provides Tinnitus Support Groups throughout the county, and also British Sign Language classes and Makaton workshops.
